Bournemouth council has announced it will hold a Festival of Sports to celebrate the Olympic Torch coming to town this summer and they want local people to get involved.

A week-long series of sporting events and celebrations are planned from July 7-14 to herald the arrival of the flame on the evening of Friday July 13.
The council wants sports clubs, youth groups, schools, fitness fans and general sports enthusiasts to participate in the festival, which will showcase the large variety of sporting clubs and societies in the region. They hope that people of all ages will feel encouraged to get involved.

Bournemouth borough council’s Champion for Sport, Derek Borthwick said: “This is a tremendously exciting event and I personally hope to see a range of activities from Judo to Cricket, Beach Volleyball to Bowls, Kite surfing to Rugby and lots more taking place during the week. Let’s all celebrate this once in a lifetime event and get into the spirit of the Olympic Games by showing what we can all do.”

Sports Recreation Officer, Matt Lloyd said: “We are appealing to sports clubs and individuals involved in any sports to get in touch quickly, so that an interesting and varied programme of events can be planned. With the Olympic Games raising awareness of the importance of physical activity, this promises to be a fun and exciting week for the town, and one that can become an annual fixture on Bournemouth’s calendar of events.”
