Dorset Police have launched an appeal for witnesses and anyone with information to come forward after a cat was found decapitated in Underhill, on the Isle of Portland.
Investigating Officer Police Constable Jamie Heath, of Weymouth Police, said forensic examination suggested the cat, “Harry”, was killed with a sharp implement.
He added: “This is a despicable act of cruelty which has left Harry’s owners distraught and I am keen to speak with anyone who has information about the person responsible.”
Safer Neighbourhood Sergeant Sam Goom said it was a “very unusual incident” which had been “very distressing” for the owners.
He added: “Safer Neighbourhood officers on the island will be working with investigators and the local community to find the person responsible.”
Dorset Police have indicated that the cat was killed on Monday night.
It was found early the next morning by a local resident on St Martin’s Road and the owners were told soon after.
