Bournemouth DVLA staff express outrage this week over remarks made by the transport minister in a recent parliamentary debate
Mike Penning stated that with regard to law enforcement “most prosecutions are done through Swansea,” and while he recognized good work is done in the local offices he added that, “most of it is being done through technology.”
Bournemouth representative for the Public and Commercial Services Union (PCS) representing the workers, Berewyn Long said: “This is simply not true. There are dozens of courts around England, Wales and Scotland that DVLA uses to take cases against motorists who have not paid road tax.
“Any case that is put through to go to the magistrate’s court in the Swansea area is set up, dealt with and responded to by the Bournemouth enforcement centre. The prosecutions are also set up by Bournemouth as well.
Berewyn Long explains why DVLA staff are angered at the transport ministers comments in parliament:
“We are urging members to write to their MP about the parliamentary debate and it’s inaccuracies, we need to do all we can to save the offices.”
The PCS are currently working on a rebuttal to set the record straight.
MPs from Bournemouth and Poole including: Annette Brooke, Conor Burns, Tobias Ellwood and Robert Syms will also visit the Bournemouth office on Friday to better understand the work carried out there.
