Major road resurfacing that started yesterday on a key route has slowed down the pace of the traffic in Bournemouth.

The works will be finished by Friday and will affect a stretch of Christchurch Road between St Swithun’s Road roundabouts and Manor Road.

Ian Kalra, transportation services manager, said: “Ordinarily we try and work between peak periods but on this occasion we need to work longer hours to get it finished more quickly.”

The closure of the road has slightly slowed down the traffic but the road will be open from 7pm to to 7am in the morning, according to Kalra.

Mrs Margaret Clifford, 72, a local resident, said: “It’s right on the beach, so if people are pulling up more often at the traffic light, it’s going to stop the movement.”

“I think the noise would be quite annoying,” she added.

John Glennon, 70, said: “There is always somebody drilling, banging, and knocking. So, I am used to it.”

Since the works have just started, majority of the residents on the road are not objecting it.

Miss Aleksandra Kolodziej, 30, said: “It’s the first day, so it’s fine up till now but it might get annoying later.”

“The road will be better running surface for all the vehicles, especially cyclists,” according to Kalra.

“All the road markings are going to be replaced and the bus lanes and the cyclist lanes will be much clearer than they are now,” he added.

The work is part of Three Towns Travel, a major transport improvement programme which aims to improve travel between Christchurch, Bournemouth and Poole.
