Poole Central Library adds new children’s section

A new children’s section is being built at the Central Library in Poole in the Dolphin Shopping Centre, and will be opened to the public from March 25.

Adene West-Webbe, a representative of Poole Council, said: “We will be officially opening a new children’s area in our Poole Central Library in a few weeks time. The previous area has had a makeover. It’s more enticing for children & will hopefully encourage their love of reading.”

The new section will have a sea theme to link it with the harbour of Poole, and the library has added sea side murals and rugs as part of the theme.

Laura Sneddon, children’s librarian for Poole libraries, said: “It is important to encourage love of word from a young age. There is a national scheme Bookstart, to encourage babies to handle books and for parents and children to love sharing. So we wanted to present a welcoming atmosphere for children.”

Central Library is the flagship library of Poole and the council plans to modernise and add features that can attract children and compel them to pick up a book once they enter the library.

“We have a face on display that shows books with colourful covers so that children pick them up. We also have a featured chair for children, a big circular dome to sit, which is like a pothole,” said Sneddon.

During the launch week approximately 200 students from Longfleet Church of England Combined School in Poole are expected to visit the library with their own tickets that would allow them to borrow up to three books.

“It is equally good for parents or grand parents, as we will provide Bookstart rhyme times, where they can read rhymes with little musical instruments,” said Sneddon.
