Christmas market shoppers in Bournemouth say they still feel safe in the town centre following the shooting in Strasbourg on Tuesday.
One of the local residents believes it is something that “would never happen” in the seaside town.
A gunman opened fire last night in Strasbourg, killing three people and leaving twelve injured.
The incident happened at a popular Christmas market near Place Kleber.
The suspect, who is known to the authorities, is believed to have entered a security zone in the festive market to stage the attack.
Border controls have been tightened since the event as French authorities say it “cannot be ruled out” that the man has fled to Germany.
While the motive of the attack is unknown, security services are treating it as terrorism.
The gunman was injured after exchanging fire with police officers. It is believed he then escaped in a taxi.
French Interior Minister, Christophe Castaner said: “Three hundred and fifty police and gendarmes are currently on the ground to apprehend the suspect, supported by two helicopters, the RAID (French anti-terror police), the BRI (anti-gang brigade) and the Sentinel force.
Molly Scott Cato, MEP for South West England, tweeted her condolences for the victims of the shooting and says Europe will remain strong against terror threats.
