Thousands of beautifully decorated cakes will be on sale for charity this Saturday as Cupcake Camp 2012 comes to Bournemouth Pavilion.

After the huge success of last year’s inaugural Bournemouth Cupcake Camp the event has returned with more cakes on sale and more baking competitions.

The event is organised by Margaret Hitchman, owner of Charminster based Cake Heaven. She says that she was “blown away” by last year’s turnout.

“I don’t think anything quite prepared us for what we saw when we came down the stairs and saw the crowds. The doorman on the venue told me they hadn’t seen this much action since they started.”

Take a look at last year’s event here.

Over 2000 cakes have been donated and will be on sale for one to two pounds to raise money for NSPCC. As well as the sales and musical entertainment there will also be 14 different competitions categories open to all aspiring bakers, including:

  • Olympic Cupcake
  • Best of Bournemouth
  • Best Vintage Cupcake
  • Mothers Day Cupcake
  • Best Vegan Cupcake
  • St Patricks’s Day Cupcake
  • Best Giant Cupcake
  • Best Cakepop (cake on a stick!)
  • Diamond Jubilee
  • Best Children’s Cupcake baked by a child under 12
  • Best Children’s Cupcake baked by an adult
  • Inter-school Cupcake

Judges for the competitions will be a panel of professional bakers as well TV personality Esther Rantzen.

Cupcake camps have become very popular in America, with events in major cities like San Francisco and New York. Bournemouth’s Cupcake camp is the only UK event outside of London.

“It’s not just like your little cake and bake sale, it’s huge”, said Margaret. “I feel it’s a good way of giving something back”

Cupcake camp 2012 will take place 2-5pm at Bournemouth Pavillion, Westover Road.

Government soldiers have set up checkpoints along the roads to towns including Harasta, Douma and Sakba – all within 15 km of the Capital. Convoys of tanks have been seen advancing towards rebel held areas, and intermittent gunfire can be heard.
