David James is leaving AFC Bournemouth after his contract was terminated by mutual consent.

James was signed by former manager Paul Groves in September 2012, and the 42-year-old goalkeeper made 19 appearances for the Cherries in nearly six months at the Goldsands Stadium.

AFC Bournemouth said James was an integral part of the team that went 18 games unbeaten in all competitions, but lost his place in the 18 following the Cherries 3-1 defeat at Walsall.

Ian Wheadon, a fan of AFC Bournemouth for 42 years, said: “It’s sad to see him go, but we have too many goalkeepers at the moment, so it’s understandable. He doesn’t have age on his side and it’s probably better that we now have younger keepers coming on. Hopefully we will have a better future.”
