Frank Bruno MBE gave a talk at Bournemouth University this week, speaking to a filled room of students and the local community for World Mental Health Day.
The former heavyweight world champion has struggled with mental health problems for many years, and visited Bournemouth University to talk about his own experiences.
Recounting his moving story to the audience, Bruno said: “The biggest fight of your life is when you retire” referring to the struggle he faced after his leave from boxing.
His new autobiography, Let Me Be Frank, described as a “truthful and definitive”, is an account of the care he received after he was sectioned two times during a small period back in 2012.
Released next Tuesday (17th), Bruno uses the book to create a more open discussion about mental health, particularly the need to do more to support fighters who develop problems in the ring. He goes on to say:
“When you are famous, you can sometimes lose your life”
Bruno’s talk was a hit with the crowd, with a number of positive reactions online. Natasha Devon MBE, a writer and campaigner for mental health awareness was also in Bournemouth to attend the talk, saying:
Was a total honour to hear @frankbrunoboxer speak this evening. Candid, thoughtful and oh-so humble – he’s a truly beautiful soul. ❤️

Bruno continues his work fighting the stigma, setting up his own charity the Frank Bruno Foundation. The charity provides non-contact boxing programmes, for adults and young people facing or recovering from mental health problems or suffering from social and emotional difficulties.
