Bournemouth Borough council has recorded that between August 2018 and March 2019, temporary accommodation was given to 29 local rough sleepers.
Most of them have now moved into a permanent residence.
This is in addition to the 10-15 people who are helped per year as a result of local services.
The improvements come after the local council were given a government grant of £387,500 in June of last year, in order to tackle homelessness.
Councillor Robert Lawton, Cabinet member for housing, has stated: “We are already seeing significant results in helping more people off the streets thanks to the additional funding.”
A further grant of £359,250 has been awarded for the coming year.
This comes alongside an extra £183,600 to employ three ‘navigators’ to work closely with rough sleepers, by providing support for a move into permanent accommodation.
It is hoped that this will prevent any potential return to the streets.
Lawton continues: “It’s important that we direct the funding to the right areas to ensure we have the most impact, including, frontline outreach, drug and alcohol support as well as mental health support.
“Often those sleeping rough have very complex needs and some may have been on the streets for a long time and so it requires intensive and specialist support to ensure vulnerable people can move off the streets and in to suitable accommodation and receive the ongoing support they need.”
