The winners of a competition to promote Bournemouth’s heritage, run in conjunction with Bournemouth’s libraries and the Streets of Bournemouth web site, have been announced.
Children and adults alike were encouraged to get creative in support of Bournemouth’s history and heritage. The competition was announced in July to coincide with the first anniversary of the website.
Streets of Bournemouth is a collaborative project ran by the Bournemouth Borough Council and Bournemouth University. The project aims to create a definitive ‘virtual museum’ of Bournemouth’s history and development over the years.
The winners were Hallie Goodchild, four, Louis Davy, nine, Jack Peckham-White, 15, and Mellissa Law.
Under-fives were encouraged to draw a picture of their home while under-tens built models. The 15 and under were challenged to think up a name for the beach huts at Alum Chine. The adult category was a photographic competition. All entries are now on display at Bournemouth library, The Triangle.
Councillor Ian Lancashire, Cabinet Member for Arts and Culture, said: “Streets of Bournemouth web site is a fantastic resource for young and old who are looking to discover more about Bournemouth’s history.
“I hope that this competition will excite and inspire residents to show what Bournemouth means to them through photography, local history, imagination and art.”
The Streets of Bournemouth web site was commissioned by the Heritage Lottery Fund to promote and sustain history and culture across the UK. Residents of Bournemouth are encouraged to contribute their images by uploading them to the website or visiting their community library.
Prizes ranging from Kindles to vouchers and book tokens, were presented by Dr Nigel Beale of successful and long-standing Bournemouth business Beale’s.
