Bournemouth residents react to M&S closure

Marks and Spencer’s announced this morning that they will be closing their Bournemouth branch, along with five others across the country at the end of April.

Changes will affect 470 jobs in total but staff have been told they will be offered redeployment to other stores nearby, before redundancy is considered. There are three other stores within seven miles of the Bournemouth store.

M&S Director of Retail, Sacha Berendji said in a Press Release ‘We don’t want any colleagues to leave M&S and we will work with each colleague individually on what is best for them as we endeavour to give everyone a role. However, we accept in some cases we may have to consider redundancy.

Eight other stores will be considered for closure as part of M&S’ chief executive Steve Rowe’s five-year turnaround plan.

People in Bournemouth had mixed opinions about the closure:

Update:

Bournemouth’s M&S store will be closing 18th April.
